4th Annual Lodi Tour of Albariño Weekend

Come to Lodi for a Taste of Spain from August 9-11th!

Summertime is perfect for tasting fresh, cool, crisp white wines! Don’t miss this fun and informational weekend to taste the best of Lodi Albariño! On August 9-11th, 8 of Lodi’s wineries will be celebrating International Albariño Day during the 4th Annual Lodi Tour of Albariño weekend. The Lodi appellation is well known for its innovative approach to winemaking and wine varieties, with over 100 different varieties being produced in the area. Albariño is one of the leaders and has been grown in Lodi for over 20 years. There is a reason this Iberian grape varietal continues to gain popularity locally and across the country. Albariño is a crowd pleaser and is crisp, yet complex with balanced acidity and incredibly intense aromatics. During this unique weekend, visitors will be able to pick up a free guidebook at any of the participating wineries and map their visit to enjoy a complimentary taste of Albariño. You can taste the different terroir and winemaking styles. Many wineries will offer special tastings only available at this event. And the fun doesn’t stop here…participants will be entered in a raffle for each winery they visit.

About the wine grape variety, Albariño
Albariño is a dry white wine produced from a wine grape variety that is best known in the Iberian Peninsula countries of Spain and Portugal. Albariño is typically found in the Rias Baixas area of Galicia in Northwestern Spain and known as Alvarinho in Portugal. It is thick-skinned and small-berried with aromatics similar to a Riesling.  Albariño is thought to originate from Germany. Documentary evidence suggests that German monks planted the grape in 1185 on the pilgrimage route to Santiago. This would logically explain that the name, “Alba-riño,” means “the Rhine white.” Its popularity in California is on the rise with grapes being planted in Lodi, Napa, Sonoma and the Central Coast. The first known planting in California was in 1992.  This white wine grape generally produces a light colored, aromatic with crips acidity and a light to medium texture that often exhibits citrus and stone fruit characteristics.
