Announcement of the Honorees for the Stockton Arts Commission’s 37th Annual Arts Awards!

Each year we select people in our city to recognize who have been exceptional in their participation, talent, and support of the Arts. This year we are emphasizing how Advocacy of the Arts is so important in a community.

We are so pleased and happy to announce the following Honorees for this Celebration of 2014-

STAR AWARD

Marian Jacobs- Founder of The Stockton Arts Commission, The Marian Jacobs Literary Forum, and supporter of all the Arts in Stockton for decades.

PATRON AWARD

Susan Carson- a strong advocate of the Arts of all kinds in Stockton from the Symphony to Stockton Civic Theatre to the innovative W.O.W!

FOUNDER’S AWARD

Donna Brown- Long time Arts Commission Chair, she founded the Stockton Arts Foundation, campaigned for the Arts Commission Funds, and helped found the Tidewater Gallery.

COMET AWARD

Mike and Lisa Whirlow’s of Whirlow’s Tossed and Grilled- this team has opened their business to all the Artists, performers, and musicians to advocate and support the Arts.

OUTSTANDING ARTS EDUCATION

Dance- Margret Smallie- for over 50 years this lady has taught dance pupils the Cecchetti ballet principles and enhanced their lives with the appreciation and love of Dance.

OUTSTANDING ARTS EDUCATION

Music- Thomas Derthick –Serving in his 15th year as Music Director of the Central Valley Youth Symphony, he has conducted and directed in Modesto, the San Joaquin Country Honor Orchestra, and joined the University of the Pacific faculty of the Pacific Conservatory of Music in 1988.

POSTHUMOUS  OUTSTANDING ARTS EDUCATION-Music and Performance

German Aguilar-  We lost this outstanding young man suddenly after his amazing accomplishments and impact on the students at S.J.Delta College in the Choir and Vocal Jazz Departments and just having been named the new Stockton Chorale Director.

POSTHUMOUS OUTSTANDING THEATRE ARTIST AND  ARTS EDUCATOR

Joseph “Jerry” Rodgers-One of the key figures to bring the Stockton Civic Theatre from infancy to success, Jerry taught in the Stockton Unified School District, as well in the New York area in the theatre arts divisions and education theatre productions, as well as being a consummate performer, designer and director.

The Awards Event will be held at the Stockton Civic Memorial Auditorium on Saturday, October 18, 2014. Mark Berkner from San Joaquin Delta College Culinary will be in charge of our delicious hors d’oeuvres, and wine and entertainment will add to this festive evening to “Celebrate and Advocate the Arts.”  Tickets are $40.00 each, and you may purchase on line at Eventbrite.com and from the Arts Commission Office at 209-937-8837.
