Women’s Center-Youth & Family Services was presented on Friday, January 10 with a grant to support DAWN (Directions for Abused Women in Need) House, the agency’s undisclosed emergency shelter located in Stockton, which provides a safe haven and a wide range of free, supportive services to more than 550 battered women and children each year.
The $5,000 grant was awarded to Women’s Center-YFS by Capitol Network, a Sacramento women’s organization that has given more than $500,000, since its founding in 1983, to charities and non-profits that provide services to women and children throughout California.
Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman wrote a letter in support of Women’s Center-YFS’ application for grant funding, and attended the presentation on Friday.
“Because of its status as the sole provider of vital shelter and services to battered women and their children, Women’s Center-Youth and Family Services is an indispensable component of the county’s social services support network, and the health and well-being of our community,” Assemblymember Eggman said. “I am happy to help their efforts however I can, and I am grateful to Capitol Network for their support.”
Women's Center-YFS serves more than 21,000 individuals annually through its direct services and community outreach, including more than 750 women, children and youth who stay in its shelters each year. The agency has a budget of $4.2 million, and a staff of 75 providing services at 11 sites throughout San Joaquin County. Women's Center-YFS is the county’s only provider of free, confidential shelter and services specifically designed to meet the needs of homeless and runaway youth and victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Women's Center-YFS' goals are to increase awareness and provide safety, support and hope to its clients, while working to end domestic violence, sexual assault and youth homelessness in the community.
