Fight the Bite - Fourth of July Weekend

WEST NILE VIRUS IS VERY ACTIVE THIS YEAR

San Joaquin County Mosquito and Vector Control District (District) cautions residents to beware of mosquitoes while outdoors. “T his week is one of the most active weeks of West Nile virus (WNV) found in mosquito samples since the arrival of WNV in San Joaquin County (2004)” said Shaoming Huang, Ph.D., Dist rict Entomologist. “Taking these simple precautions, can reduce risk of mosquito-borne disease”, said Huang.

  • Apply insect repellent containing the active ingredient DEET or Picaridin when outdoors, according to label instructions.
  • When outdoors, wear long pants, long-sl eeved shirts and other protective clothing.
  • Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property that can support mosquito breeding.
  • Exclude mosquitoes from your home with ti ght fitting screens on doors and windows.
  • Report significant mosquito infestations to San Joaquin County Mosquito & Vector Control District at www.sjmosquito.org (209) 982-4675, 1-800-300-4675.
  • Report dead birds to 1-877-WNV-BIRD (1-877-968-2473) or www.westnile.ca.gov .
