FLOOD READY WORKSHOP  AT THE MARGARET K. TROKE BRANCH LIBRARY

On Saturday, February 8, at 2:00 p.m., the Margaret K Troke Branch Library presents a workshop on flood readiness with the purpose of educating possibly impacted communities about the risk associated with flooding and the steps they can take within their households to prepare and protect their families and their homes.

"Flood Ready" is a basic-level course delivered in a seminar environment. The course provides participants the opportunity to learn about flood risk and readiness in Stockton and the San Joaquin Delta area. Topics will include basic preparedness with localized information to cover specific geographic risks of the Stockton-San Joaquin County area. This informative workshop will be presented by Mimi Feissa of the Sacramento Chapter of the American Red Cross.

This course consists of 3 parts, scheduled into a one-hour session.
            1) An overview of flooding, with Hurricane Sandy and the 1997 Central Valley events as examples.
            2) Facts about flood risk in this area, with several map images.
            3) A presentation on Red Cross Readiness: “Get A Kit, Make A Plan, Be Informed.” It  includes flood-specific resources.

At the conclusion of the session, participants will possess the resources to prepare themselves and help prepare their community for flooding. They will be able to:

            • Enact Red Cross readiness of building a kit, making a family communication plan, and staying informed
            • Contact flood resources on the internet
            • Understand which areas are at a highest risk of flooding
            • Understand basic steps for flood preparedness

Presenter Mimi Feissa has a B.S. in International Business from Sacramento State University. Although qualified for business in the private sector, she prefers to use her post-graduation    time serving as an AmeriCorps National Preparedness & Response Corps (NPRC) member for    the American Red Cross, realizing that no dollar or fiat amount can make her as truly happy as when she is helping those in need.

Continue the learning by checking out books, reviewing online databases, and searching the Internet – all for free at your local public library!
