“Out of the Box” Mural Design Contest Reaches Out to Local Student Artists

Downtown Stockton Alliance and the SMART Project Announce Out of the Box Mural Design Contest

The Downtown Stockton Alliance (DSA) in partnership with the S.M.A.R.T. Artist Group (SMART) announce the first annual “Out of the Box” mural competition. It will showcase art by local students whose winning designs will be painted on utility boxes in downtown Stockton. Student artists will be paired with SMART Project’s mentors who are professional artists based in Stockton.

Michael L. Oliva, Founder and Senior Art Director for SMART, is excited to partner with the DSA on this new community effort. “The S.M.A.R.T. Project was started as a way for local student artists to be given opportunities to contribute public art to their community,” said Oliva. “These young artists can express themselves visually, learn core job responsibilities, and be paid stipends while working with professional artists from Stockton. They will learn art has worth and value and that their efforts benefit our city.”

The purpose of the contest is to select original art for permanent murals on public utility boxes in high visibility locations in the downtown area. These will convey the “Celebrate Stockton” theme, which focuses on the history, community, diversity, unity, and creativity of Stockton.

“This is a great opportunity to beautify downtown, transform standard utility boxes into art emblematic of the spirit of Stockton and give our enthusiastic students a sense of positive ownership in downtown,” commented Leandro Vicuna, the DSA Chief Executive Officer.

Timeline of the “Out of the Box” Mural Project:
February 28 – Design submissions open
March 28 – Design submissions close at Midnight
June 6 – Artist training workshops
June 7 & 8 – Mural painting
“Out of the Box” celebration to commemorate the murals will be announced at a later date.

All original art must be submitted digitally to: [email protected] with “Out of the Box” in the subject line.

Art submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges. Submissions will be limited to the first 250 received. Artists of the selected designs will be invited to a training workshop and will paint the designs on selected utility boxes. Any artists submitting designs are invited to attend the workshops. All winners and painters will be awarded cash stipends for the days spent installing the designs with the guidance of expert artist mentors.
