Delta College to open new food pantry for students

Goal to fight food insecurity, help students with basic needs

Recognizing that food insecurity is a significant concern on college campuses, Delta College officials on Friday will open a new food pantry.

The pantry will help students reach their academic goals by ensuring that their basic needs are met first.

WHAT: The grand opening of Delta College’s new food pantry

WHERE: Delta’s Stockton campus, in the Shima Center Room 101-F

WHEN: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, March 15

WHO: Delta College Superintendent/President Kathy Hart, other College leaders, Delta College student representatives

WHY: A 2017 survey of more than 33,000 community college students across the country found that roughly two out of every three studentsqualified as “food insecure.” Recognizing this problem, the California Legislature allocated $2.5 million for community colleges to identify solutions.

After a collaborative planning effort, Delta College officials decided to convert an existing student lounge into a food pantry that will be complete with refrigerators and microwaves as well as shelves stocked with nutritious foods. The food pantry will be accessible to students during regular hours.

“Many college students are unsure of where their next meal is coming from. How can we expect students to take exams if they haven’t had breakfast that morning?” said Angela Tos, Delta’s dean of enrollment services and student development. “We worked very closely with faculty, staff and students as well as our community partners to address this issue, and we’re excited to open the doors of our new food pantry for the first time.”
