The City of Stockton Fire Department wants to help residents plan and enjoy a safe Independence Day.  A community celebration will take place at Weber Point Events Center downtown Stockton.  Event details and information are available at www.stocktonca.gov.  For those enjoying a July 4th celebration at home, please remember to use only Safe and Sane Fireworks within the city of Stockton and only during the permitted times and days.

Fireworks classified as “Safe and Sane” by the State Fire Marshal are approved for sale and use in the City of Stockton.  Safe and Sane Fireworks are generally described as fireworks that do not explode or leave the ground and carry a special State Fire Marshal Safe and Sane seal.  The sale of Safe and Sane Fireworks in Stockton is limited to 30 nonprofit organizations selected to receive a permit for sale.

Use of fireworks in Stockton city limits is restricted to the following dates and times: June 28, from Noon to 11:00 p.m., and June 29 through July 4, between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.  Use or sale of Safe and Sane fireworks outside of these dates and times is illegal.  All fireworks that do not carry the State Fire Marshal Safe and Sane Seal are illegal. Possession, sale or use of illegal fireworks is punishable by jail and up to $1,000 in fines.

To report illegal firework or discharge of Safe and Sane fireworks outside restricted dates and times, use Ask Stockton on the City website or call the Stockton Police Department non-emergency number at (209) 937-8377.  Please be sure to provide the location information for the illegal fireworks activity, and the Stockton Fire Department will work with the Stockton Police Department to address any violations.

For a safe July 4th, please follow these safety tips:

  • Only Safe and Sane fireworks are permitted within the city limits of Stockton.
  • For safety, do not let children light fireworks.
  • Never hold fireworks in your hand.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby.
  • Fireworks cannot be ignited on public property or on a public street.
  • Thoroughly soak used fireworks with water before disposing of in garbage bins.

Check with neighborhood Fire Stations for additional information and safety tips. Lawn signs with fireworks information are available through the Stockton Fire Department Fire Prevention Division by calling (209) 937-8271.
