San Joaquin County Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Program Partners with 15 Local Health Promotion Programs to Make the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice

WHAT: Fruit and Veggie Fest 2019 is a free community event sponsored by the San Joaquin County Public Health Services (PHS) Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (NEOP) program. This annual event aims to encourage shoppers to improve their health by filling their shopping carts with a colorful array of fruits and vegetables.

Through activities at the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, attendees will learn how to incorporate a rainbow of colorful fruits and vegetables into meals and snacks. Food demonstrations will highlight the ease of making meals from the CalFresh Healthy Living campaign. In addition, sample recipes and produce tasting will be offered along with tours of the grocery store and local agencies will offer informational and interactive health education booths. There will be fun activities for the whole family.

WHEN: Thursday, September 12, 2019

10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

WHERE: Grocery Outlet Bargain Market

1060 N. Wilson Way, Stockton, CA 95205

WHY: The Central Valley is one of the world's most productive agricultural regions. Unfortunately, many people in our community live in food deserts that have very few markets that sell fresh, quality fruits and vegetables. The focus of this event is on promoting access to programs and services promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing rates of obesity in San Joaquin County. The Fruit and Veggie Fest 2019 provides an opportunity to connect individuals in the community with valuable resources (e.g., local resources, service agencies and locally grown fruits and vegetables).

The event’s activities provide opportunities to educate families about the importance of regularly consuming more fruits and vegetables and water to improve their health.

The PHS/NEOP program and its Refresh San Joaquin project recognizes that corner stores, supermarket chains, retail partnerships and activities like the Fruit and Veggie Fest 2019, all play a critical role in the battle against the obesity epidemic, particularly among low-income populations who are at greater risk. Working together, we are bringing about positive change to the community!
