Tips To Get You Organized This Spring

Spring Flowers

Ah, the joys of springtime! I love this season because of the annual ritual called spring-cleaning. Personally, I love being able to say goodbye to items I haven’t used in a long time. It makes me feel good to be able to pass on usable items to my favorite charity, and toss out worn items that are just taking up space.

However, there may be a few of you who may have some fear about parting with your belongings or just thinking about all the work it takes to get organized and tackle this annual ritual. There is always too much to do with so little time. In fact, you may not have even done last year’s spring-cleaning because you were too busy then. Just the thought of it brings a tightening to your stomach and a headache just waiting to start. It does not have to be so.

How do you get organized when there is clutter, and piles of stuff to get rid of? Whether you have just one junk drawer or a closet, one room or the whole house to organize, you can accomplish spring-cleaning this year. It’s easy. It just takes action—your action.

Being organized and getting organized may mean different things to different people. To me organizing is not spring cleaning or just making things neat. Being organized does not mean stuffing things in drawers or cabinets. My definition of being organized can be defined as "knowing WHAT you have, and being able to FIND what you want WHEN you want it." Being organized can be learned; however, staying organized takes practice.

When you are ready to start, here are some tips for you. Look at each item and decide if you will:
THROW it away, PUT it away, DONATE, or GIVE it away, SELL it, KEEP if you use or need it
The following are a few things that you can implement right away. Start by ensuring the safety of your home. Clear all entrances, hallways, and doorways. Do not pile anything on or near electrical cords. Do a clean sweep and get rid of all garbage.

Toss out old, unwanted, or broken items. Return borrowed items to its owner. Get rid of all unidentified keys. Donate items in good condition to your favorite charity. Devote some time each day to putting things back where they belong. When you’ve implemented some of the above tips, you will be able to say, "I’ve started my spring cleaning and I’m going to finish it this year." Unless you start, you will not finish. Just take one step at a time; it is that simple. One final thought that I would like to share with you; it is three of my favorite Hawaiian words: Akamai, Imua, & Kokua. To me that means ‘Be smart in your life, move forward, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
