The Stockton Sports Commission is hosting the Stockton Sports Commission Junior Open for the 3rd consecutive year. The talented boys and girls from around the country, ages 12-18, will tee off on Tuesday, August 3rd at The Reserve Golf Course off of 8 Mile Road. Beginning Tuesday and ending Thursday, August 5th, tournament golfers will have the chance to demonstrate their skills and earn top scores with the purpose to claim tournament champion titles.
The youth golfers and their families will spend the week here in Stockton not only hitting the beautiful greens of The Reserve Golf Course but also experiencing the unique and tasty restaurants Stockton has to offer as well as staying in our finest hotels. The presence of the tournament helps to boost our local economy by bringing in new money to these local hotels and restaurants from participants and their families. Don Miller, the Director of the Stockton Sports Commission, states “The AJGA tournament actually has one of the biggest economical impacts on the community out of all of our sporting events because the tournament is one week long. Hotels and restaurants reap the benefits over the course of more than several days.”
The AJGA, American Junior Golf Association, is a national organization that promotes youth golf. The Stockton Sports Commission has been pleased to provide a top of the line venue for one of the AJGA’s tournaments. Stockton will be only one of the many stops on the tour for the AJGA golfers which include but are not limited to New York, North Carolina, and Texas. Nationwide college scouts come to the event to discover future prospective athletes for their universities. Our own University of the Pacific’s head men’s golf coach, Brandon Goethals, is happy to see the AJGA come to Stockton. “I was so excited to hear that Mr. Miller and the Sports Commission teamed up with the AJGA to bring an event to Stockton,” Goethals said. “They are both first class organizations and I promise you this is a great thing for our city.”
The Stockton Sports Commission, headed by Director Don Miller, attempts to bring sporting events to Stockton that highlight what Stockton has to offer and increase the circulation of new money in the economy. As cited from their website “Our goal is to enhance Stockton's image, provide entertainment for the community and visitors, and contribute to the quality of life in the Stockton area”.
