Through Sunday, September 28, 2014, Stockton Civic Theatre will present the Tony-Award winning Broadway musical “Chicago.” Premiering on Broadway in 1975, “Chicago” has seen over 7,300 performances and is expected to become the second longest-running musical in Broadway history later this year.
In roaring twenties Chicago, chorus girl Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap…until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess” Velma Kelly vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of fame, fortune and acquittal. This sharp edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse.
The musical boasts an extensive cast led by Terra Fearrand as Roxie Hart and Jazmyne Toney as Velma Kelly. Other principal roles include Oran Shaun Baker as Billy Flynn, James Snyder as Amos Hart, and Leanita Taylor as Matron “Mama” Morton.
Director Costello serves double duty as SCT’s Artistic Director and Director of “Chicago.” An Elly Award winner, Costello recently was awarded SCT’s Willie Award for Outstanding Production of a Play for last season’s “It Runs in the Family.” Assisting him will be Shawn Carrington as Assistant Director and Evelyn Barney executing choreography in the style of Bob Fosse. Joshua Landin is Musical Director conducting a live orchestra. The elaborate Broadway-style set is designed by SCT’s Technical Director Brian Johnson.
