NHL Draft for Flames

The 2019 NHL Draft selection order is taking shape and the Flames’ will officially select 26th overall in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft on Friday, June 21. Flames have five picks in the seven rounds of the NHL Draft.

Round 1: 26th overall

Round 3: 88th overall

Round 4: 116th overall (From Islanders)

Round 5: 150th overall

Round 7: 214th overall (From Hurricanes)


The first 15 spots in the draft were decided on Apr. 9 when the NHL held their annual draft lottery, with the New Jersey Devils taking the top spot. Following the first 15 picks, the selection order is decided by the non-division winning teams eliminated in the first two rounds of the playoffs being seeded in inverse order of their regular season points. After that, the four division winning clubs are seeded in inverse order of their regular season point total.

The team that loses in the Stanley Cup Final will pick 30th overall and the Cup winner will get pick 31.

For rounds two through seven, the selection order is based on inverse order of the regular season standings. The Flames currently have five picks in this year’s draft: the first round, third round, fourth round (the Islanders’ pick via the Travis Hamonic trade in 2017), fifth round, and seventh round (the Hurricanes’ pick via a 2017 trade involving Eddie Lack).

The 2019 NHL Draft will take place at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C. on June 20-21.
