SCT presents Unnecessary Farce

Stockton Civic Theatre continues its 66th season with its 394th mainstage production of the hilarious hit comedy, Unnecessary Farce.  A mild-mannered embezzling mayor, a pair of bumbling cops, and an unlikely hit man collide in Unnecessary Farce, which opens January 11 at Stockton Civic Theatre.  Paul Slade Smith’s irresistible and unrelenting comedy will have audiences laughing all the way home!

Like any good farce, the action comes fast and funny in Paul Slade Smith’s comedy.  The official website of the play, unnecessaryfarce.com, describes the play like this:

“In a cheap motel room, an embezzling mayor is supposed to meet with his female accountant, while in the room next door, two undercover cops wait to catch the meeting on videotape. But there’s some confusion as to who’s in which room, who’s being videotaped, who’s taken the money, who’s hired a hit man, and why the accountant keeps taking off her clothes.”

After the recent harrowing political season, audiences should enjoy a little light-hearted political corruption with a happy ending.  The play gets funnier and funnier with each door-slam and ridiculous plot twist and, by the end, order is restored and our heroes have saved the day.  The Boston Globe called Unnecessary Farce “unrelentingly funny”  and the reviewer for the Post-Standard in Syracuse, New York said it was  "the funniest two hours of theater I have seen in several years. Something is at stake every second, and the most outrageous moments seem spontaneous and logical."

Unnecessary Farce has been a hit all over the country and has received numerous regional awards, including a Thespie Award for “Best New Show” in 2007. The play runs January 11-January 29, 2017 at Stockton Civic Theatre at 2312 Rosemarie Ln., Stockton. Details are at sctlivetheatre.com.

Shawn Carrington directs this hysterical farce. Stockton Civic Theatre’s production is designed by Christopher “CJ” Martin (scenic), Grace Wiesepape (costumes), Craig VIncent (lighting) and Sean Bocardo (sound).
