15th National Exhibition of the American Society of Marine Artists

With more than 120 works art, including paintings, sculpture and scrimshaw, the 15th National Exhibition of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) will fill the temporary exhibition galleries of The Haggin Museum. The works on display, from depictions of ships and seascapes to marine life and coastal scenes, represent the very best from the 530+ artist members of the Society. This 15th exhibition is “the most ambitious and comprehensive in our history,” according to ASMA President and Fellow Russ Kramer. “The vision, talent and skill on display is not to be missed by anyone with an interest in the sea and maritime art.

“What you see before you is an unbroken line connected to centuries of earlier works. While many art forms find favor and become popular, only to be eclipsed by something new, representational depictions inspired by the sea, sea life and seafaring can be found among the earliest works of human creativity, and will survive and thrive for centuries more.”The world of marine art is not limited to a painted ship upon a painted ocean. As the exhibition demonstrates, today’s artists are as just as inspired to depict breezy seashores, stark lighthouses, rocky coasts, a still pond or the denizens that inhabit the open ocean. The centuries-old art form of representational depictions inspired by the sea, sea life and seafaring is surely as vibrant as ever, energized anew with fresh visions and works in every medium.
