The San Joaquin County Mosquito and Vector Control District has confirmed the first mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus (WNV) for 2025. The infected mosquitoes were collected in the Manteca area, specifically within the 95337 and 95376 zip codes—right on schedule with the start of the summer mosquito season.
“As summer temperatures rise, so does mosquito activity,” said Aaron Devencenzi, Public Information Officer for the District. “We urge residents to take immediate steps to eliminate standing water and protect themselves from mosquito bites. Your health and safety are our top priority.”
District Response and Public Safety Measures
The District will continue monitoring mosquito populations through its surveillance program and target control efforts in the areas of highest concern, guided by scientific data. Residents are strongly encouraged to take the following actions to prevent mosquito-borne illness:
- Dump standing water: Eliminate water in containers, flowerpots, gutters, or anything else that can hold water.
- Use EPA-registered repellents: Apply insect repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), or IR3535. For more information, visit the EPA’s guide to repellents: https://www.epa.gov/insect-repellents.
- Avoid peak mosquito hours: Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, particularly the first two hours after sunset.
- Wear protective clothing: Long sleeves and pants can reduce exposed skin when outdoors.
- Keep mosquitoes out: Ensure window and door screens are in good repair to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
- Protect your animals: Talk to your veterinarian about vaccinating horses and other equines against West Nile virus.
