THE BEATLES AND THEIR SONGS - A MUSICAL REVOLUTION AT THE MARGARET K. TROKE BRANCH LIBRARY
On Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., the Margaret K. Troke Branch Library presents The Beatles and Their Songs - A Musical Revolution. The Beatles’ contribution to the history of 20th-century popular music remains unprecedented and unchallenged; their songs continue to stand the test of time. A new generation is now experiencing the quality, variety and longevity of Beatles music which makes The Beatles and their Songs - a Musical Revolution suitable for an audience of all ages and every level of musical appreciation and knowledge.
This presentation outlines the history of the group’s formation and focuses on their songs, influences, form, stylistic development and legacy. The talk includes musical examples, a PowerPoint presentation and audience interaction; singing along is encouraged.
The pop music of one’s youth plays an important role in a lifelong appreciation of music in general. During Rhys’ teenage years, the Beatles were at the height of their fame, and his love of their music continues to play an important role in his development as a musician.
Mr. Rhys’ presentation has been accepted for presentation at the International Beatles Celebration at Penn State University's Altoona College in February 2014.
Based in San Francisco, Dulais Rhys, Ph.D., has been a professional musician for over 25 years. This talk is the latest addition to his portfolio. During his career, he has given public lectures on a variety of topics in North and South America as well as throughout his native Wales. He holds Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Wales. His hobbies include reading, movies, golf, cooking, and flying.

AUTHOR TALK: REMARKABLE WOMEN OF STOCKTON AT THE MARGARET K. TROKE BRANCH LIBRARY
On Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 3:00 p.m., the Margaret K. Troke Library presents Remarkable Women of Stockton. Local Author and retired Stockton Librarian, Mary Jo Gohlke, will present a talk and slide show about 22 remarkable women in the history of Stockton from the 1870s to today based on her recently authored history of these amazing women which was published by The History Press of Charleston, South Carolina.
During Stockton’s development from a Gold Rush tent city to a leader in California transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing, women took prominent roles. Heiresses reigned in its 19th century mansions--one marrying a Polish prince! In the 1890s they took to the school board, joined government circles, and fought for votes for women. In the 20th century they helped start local colleges, run steamship lines, build food empires, and break the school district’s color barrier. Writers like Sylvia Sun Minnick and Maxine Hong Kingston chronicled the town, and Dolores Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers. Harriet Chalmers Adams caught the travel bug on walks with her father, and Dawn Mabalon rescued the history of the Filipino population. Mary Jo Gohlke, a news writer turned librarian, has captured 22 triumphant and successful women from three centuries as they took themselves and a little river city into statewide prominence.
Author Gohlke is well prepared to give a talk about these amazing Stocktonian women and will share why she chose these particular women to feature. At the end of the program, the author will be available to autograph copies of her book Remarkable Women of Stockton, copies of which will be available for sale.
Mary Jo Gohlke is a former feature writer and editor for Bay Area daily newspapers. For nine years she was with the University of the Pacific Library and then earned a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. She was with the Cesar Chavez Central Library for eight years, five of them with an emphasis in adult programming.

GENEALOGY WORKSHOP: CENSUS, VITAL, AND OTHER BASIC RECORDS AT THE MARGARET K. TROKE BRANCH LIBRARY
On Saturday, May 17, at time 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., the Margaret K. Troke Branch Library presents Census, Vital, and other Basic Records: How to find and Use them Effectively. The U.S. Census, taken every decade since 1790, contains a wealth of information about your ancestors and their families. These are the most important records to find when first starting your research. Even though Internet genealogy sources make these available on-line, many people do not observe and use that information effectively. Doing so correctly can lead to finding more information. Many other censuses can be found online such as state, specialized, foreign.
Vital records, such as birth, marriage, and death certificates are valuable in establishing the basic data to help build your family tree, but these records were not common in many places until the early 1900s. This workshop will show you how to search for this information when vital records cannot be found.
After the presentation Genealogical Society volunteers will be available to help with your research. Library computers will be available with access to Ancestry Library Edition.
After the presentation, members of the San Joaquin Genealogical Society will be available for individual help in online research. Feel free to bring your own laptop or use one of ours.

VENTRILOQUIST STEVE CHANEY WITH CORNY CROW AT THE TROKE BRANCH LIBRARY
On Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 6:00 PM, the Troke Branch Library presents Ventriloquist Steve Chaney with Corny Crow show. For 20 years Steve and his partner, “Corny Crow,” have presented their unique show for children and adults throughout Canada, from the east to west coast in the U.S. for fairs, festivals, schools and libraries. Steve’s warmth and humor come through in all his performances.
