Johnny Ford Named Stockton’s Next City Manager After Unanimous Council Vote

Stockton is welcoming a familiar face into one of its most important leadership roles. After a nationwide search that drew more than 67 applicants, the Stockton City Council has unanimously approved the appointment of Johnny Ford as the city’s next City Manager. The 7–0 vote affirms broad support for a leader who has spent decades serving communities across the country—and most importantly, the one he calls home.

Mayor Christina Fugazi shared her excitement, emphasizing that the recruitment confirmed what many already knew: the best choice for Stockton was already here.

“Johnny has lived here for many years, raised his family here, worships here, and has dedicated much of his life to serving this community,” Mayor Fugazi said. “His heart is in Stockton, and I believe he is the person who can help bring this Council together so we can move our city forward.”

A Leader With Deep Stockton Roots

Ford brings nearly 30 years of experience in public service and municipal leadership. His career began in Cincinnati, Ohio, before taking him to Durham, North Carolina, where he advanced through key roles in parks, recreation, and community services.

Eventually, Ford made his way to Stockton—where he established long-lasting ties. While serving the City of Stockton for more than a decade, he became a central figure in departments such as Parks and Recreation and later the City Manager’s Office.

Ford’s career then took him to Compton, California, where he served as Deputy City Manager and later City Manager. But through all of his professional growth, Stockton remained home.

Beyond government work, Ford is a dedicated member of Progressive Community Church and an active supporter of local organizations, including:

  • Community Partnership for Families of San Joaquin

  • United Way of San Joaquin County

  • Haggin Museum

  • Stockton Rotary Club

  • Children’s Museum

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area

  • NAACP, Stockton Branch

  • Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity

  • International City/County Management Association (ICMA)

A Collaborative Selection for Stockton’s Future

While the City Charter gives the Mayor responsibility for nominating the City Manager, Mayor Fugazi emphasized that the selection of Ford was the result of a collaborative, council-wide process.

“I believe this choice reflects our combined desire to bring experience, stability, and steady leadership back to the City of Stockton,” she said.

What’s Next

Johnny Ford will assume his new duties as City Manager on November 19. His appointment marks a hopeful new chapter for Stockton as the city continues focusing on public safety, economic revitalization, and community partnership.

Caravan News will continue to follow updates from City Hall as Ford steps into his new role and begins working with the City Council and residents to shape Stockton’s future.
