Preschool Receives $1,000 from Stockton Ports Mascot for Literacy Accomplishments

On Oct. 3, preschoolers at the Merryhill School campus in Stockton received a playful visit from Splash, the Stockton Ports mascot, to kick off Jumpstart’s Read for the Record initiative. Last spring, Merryhill preschoolers participated in the Stockton Ports program “Baseball by the Books,” which encourages literacy among all Stockton youth. As the reward for reading more books than any other school, Splash came to visit the children on Read for the Record Day and presented them with a $1,000 check for new books. Splash also read “Otis” by Loren Long. “Otis” is a children’s story about a tractor who helps save his friend the cow. To make this a memorable experience for students, Merryhill teachers helped bring the book to life by hosting a school-wide parade and petting zoo.
