‘S Wonderful: Gershwin and Kevin Cole

Two concerts feature “the best Gershwin pianist in America today”

Event date: 9/19/2015 - 9/21/2015 Export event

The Stockton Symphony’s 89th season begins with performances of ‘S Wonderful: Gershwin and Kevin Cole. Maestro Peter Jaffe conducts an all-Gershwin program with a 69-piece orchestra, performing compositions ranging from Porgy & Bess to Rhapsody in Blue, as Kevin Cole—“the best Gershwin pianist in America today” (Chicago Tribune)—shows how it’s done.

Mr. Cole has plenty of attributions testifying to his virtuosity: "Kid, if I could have played the piano like that, I wouldn't have become a songwriter" quipped Irving Berlin. "A piano genius...he reveals an understanding of harmony, rhythmic complexity and pure show-biz virtuosity that would have had Vladimir Horowitz smiling with envy," wrote critic Andrew Patner. “When Cole sits down at the piano, you would swear Gershwin himself was at work…”(Chicago Tribune).

‘S Wonderful: Gershwin and Kevin Cole takes place on Saturday, September 19 at 6:00 pm, and Sunday, September 20, 2015 at 2:30 pm in the Warren Atherton Auditorium, located on the San Joaquin Delta College campus, 5151 Pacific Avenue, Stockton. Parking is free and plentiful. Single tickets are $25, $37, $46, $56 and $66. Student and children prices range from $17 to $34. Sponsored by Joe & Rita Sublett.

Mr. Cole’s engagements include a sold-out performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl; BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall; National Symphony at the Kennedy Center; Hong Kong Philharmonic; San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony. And he has shared the concert stage with Liza Minnelli, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Lorin Maazel, Itzhak Perlman, Brian d’Arcy James, Barbara Cook, Robert Klein, and friend and mentor Marvin Hamlisch. His discography includes Gramophone Musical Album of the Year, 1995, Gershwin's Oh, Kay! with soprano Dawn Upshaw (Elektra/Nonesuch), his critically acclaimed solo piano disc, Cole Plays Gershwin and his vocal/jazz trio album In The Words Of Ira-The Songs of Ira Gershwin.

“Gershwin was a true “crossover” genius before the term was even invented,” notes Peter Jaffe, music director and conductor of the Stockton Symphony. “His blend of popular jazz elements with symphonic style creates the universal appeal. With a program including American in Paris, selections from Porgy and Bess, and a renowned Gershwin expert playing Rhapsody in Blue and Variations on I Got Rhythm—who could ask for anything more?” More there is: Gershwin’s Cuban Overture and An American in Paris will also be included in the program.

Now entering its 89th year, the Stockton Symphony ranks third among California’s professional orchestras in ongoing performance, behind only the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony. Peter Jaffe, conductor and musical director of the Stockton Symphony celebrated his 20th season with the symphony last year.
