San Joaquin County Parks Receives $100K Grant to Bring “Parks After Dark” to Stockton Neighborhoods

San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation is preparing to bring more evening activities, family fun, and community connection to local parks through a new grant-funded initiative designed to make neighborhood public spaces more active, welcoming, and engaging.

The department has been awarded $100,000 through Trust for Public Land’s Central Valley Park Access and Activation Grant Program to launch Parks After Dark, a pilot program focused on expanding free recreational programming and community activities at County-run neighborhood parks in Stockton.

The grant was awarded through a competitive process involving communities across the Central Valley. The program supports efforts that activate parks, encourage community engagement, and help residents make greater use of public spaces.

Parks After Dark is expected to launch later this summer and will offer free evening activities designed to bring families, youth, and residents together in safe and positive environments. Programming may include wellness activities, family events, recreation opportunities, cultural programming, youth activities, and partnerships with local community organizations.

The initiative will focus on creating safer, healthier, and more connected communities by giving residents more opportunities to gather, participate, and enjoy their neighborhood parks after traditional daytime hours.

San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation is also asking the community to help shape the program. Residents are encouraged to complete a brief survey and share what types of activities they would like to see offered during Parks After Dark events.

The survey takes about two minutes to complete, but the feedback gathered will help guide programming throughout the summer. Whether residents are interested in fitness classes, family-friendly events, cultural celebrations, youth programs, or other neighborhood gatherings, their input will help ensure Parks After Dark reflects the needs and interests of the community.

The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with County departments and community-based organizations, with a strong emphasis on outreach, participation, and listening to local residents.

Additional details, including participating park locations, activity schedules, and opportunities for public input, will be announced soon.

For families and neighbors in Stockton, Parks After Dark represents more than a new summer program. It is an investment in community connection, healthier neighborhoods, and the simple joy of coming together in shared public spaces.

Residents are encouraged to make their voices heard and help shape a program that can bring lasting benefits to local parks and the communities they serve.
