Stockton Symphony Announces 2013 - 14 Season

The Stockton Symphony unveiled its 2013-14 season today, featuring five Classics Series concerts and four Pops Series concerts. A detailed list of concerts accompanies this release.

Pops
The Symphony will open the season on September 21st and 22nd with its Autumn Pops, featuring a breathless virtuoso fiddle performance by an original star of Riverdance, Eileen Ivers. Joined by her ensemble, Immigrant Soul, and local Irish dancers, Ivers is known for her electrifying concerts that bring audiences to their feet.

The Pops season also includes John Pagano, the lead singer in legendary Burt Bacharach’s band for more than 14 years, in a romantic Valentine Pops presentation on February 15th and 16th; a return of the Broadway Tenors on December 14th and 15th to “sing in” the Yuletide Season with the Symphony at the family favorite, Holiday Pops; and the finalists from season four of “America’s Got Talent,” The Texas Tenors, who kick it up a notch at the Pops & Picnic concert on May 3rd–a fundraiser party and concert wrapped into one very popular event.

Classics
The Symphony’s Classics season premieres on Saturday, October 26th when pianist Gabriela Martinez makes her first appearance with the Symphony, performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 1, in an all-Russian program that also features Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2.  The classics concerts will include works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Bizet, Ravel, and Shostakovich.

“We’re excited to present such a wonderful array of familiar favorites,” said Music Director Peter Jaffe.  “The orchestra has been playing more wonderfully than ever, and I know that our audiences are in for some sublime evenings this season.”

In addition to well-known masterworks, the orchestra will also present a recent work by American composer Michael Daugherty, a concerto for flute and chamber orchestra, titled “Trail of Tears,” that will be performed by the Symphony’s principal flutist, Jennifer Olson in the second Classics concert on November 16th. The Symphony brings back popular guest artist, pianist Jon Nakamatsu, for Classics III: Keyboard Majesty in a special solo piano recital on January 25th.

In a rare solo pairing of violin and viola, returning favorite violinist Elena Urioste and violist Juan Miguel Hernandez, in his first appearance with the Stockton Symphony, will perform Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in Classics IV: Young At Heart on March 22nd. The highly anticipated performance by returning cellist Amit Peled of Schumann’s Cello Concerto will be the highlight of Classics V: Victory Finale when the 2013-14 Classics season closes on April 12, 2014.

Non-subscription concerts
In addition to the subscription series, the Symphony will also offer a Presentation concert in its ongoing Music Beyond Borders series—an effort to expand beyond the concert hall and bring great music to venues throughout the community. Electric violinist Tracy Silverman will perform at Tillie Lewis Theatre on the Delta College campus, October 4th.

The Symphony will also sponsor a Discovery concert on February 1st at Atherton Auditorium where Tracy Silverman will premiere composer Kenji Bunch’s concerto for electric violin, “Embrace,” recently commissioned by the Symphony through a Music Alive grant.
