Stockton has a new high-tech hub humming along East Mariposa Road, and it's already put more than 1,000 people to work. Walmart celebrates the grand opening of its newest fulfillment center Thursday, bringing a wave of local jobs and a major new piece of West Coast shipping infrastructure to the city.
Walmart Fulfillment Center #4091, at 5150 E. Mariposa Rd., is the retailer's fifth next-generation fulfillment center and is built to speed up shipping and delivery on millions of items for customers across California and the West Coast. The high-tech operation pairs automation with associate-driven work, giving Stockton workers the chance to build technology-focused skills alongside the more than 1,000 jobs the facility has already created in the region.
As part of Thursday's celebration, Walmart will also present $10,000 in grants to organizations serving the Stockton community, alongside a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee and Stockton Chamber of Commerce CEO Timm Quinn are set to join Walmart leaders, including fulfillment center General Manager Dean Yoder, Senior Vice President of Fulfillment Network Karisa Sprague and Vice President of Fulfillment Barat Smith, for remarks and the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The opening marks one of Stockton's larger employment additions this year. Walmart says the new facility will help it deliver faster for customers up and down the West Coast as part of its broader push into high-tech, next-generation fulfillment operations.
