Art lovers, writers, and supporters of student creativity are invited to step into five decades of imagination and expression when Muse: Calliope at 55 opens at the Reynolds Gallery. The exhibition marks the first-ever retrospective of Calliope, the arts and literary journal of the University of the Pacific, celebrating its 55-year legacy of student storytelling, art, and design.

The public is warmly invited to attend the opening reception on January 29 from 6 to 8 p.m., offering a chance to explore the exhibit, connect with student creators, and celebrate the enduring impact of Calliope. The exhibition will remain on view through February 27.

Curated by the student production team behind the upcoming issue of Calliope, the exhibition goes beyond a simple display of past journals. Muse: Calliope at 55 uncovers the lore, labor, and lineage of the publication, revealing how an annual student-led journal has evolved through shifting artistic styles, editorial voices, and personal contributions over five decades.

Visitors will encounter editions from the university archives alongside original artwork, cover designs, and behind-the-scenes materials that showcase the creative process. From layout experiments and promotional materials to editorial decision-making, the exhibit highlights how design choices shape the way art and literary works are experienced. An interactive creative zone invites guests to engage directly with the spirit of experimentation that defines Calliope.

For those unable to attend the opening reception, there is still an opportunity to support the next chapter of this student tradition. Community members are encouraged to consider making a gift to help fund the printing of Calliope LV 2026, as printing remains the journal’s greatest expense. Contributions help ensure that student voices and artwork continue to reach readers in print for years to come.

Muse: Calliope at 55 is more than a retrospective—it’s a celebration of student creativity, collaboration, and the lasting power of the arts at Pacific. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or discovering Calliope for the first time, the exhibition offers a meaningful look at how student expression has shaped—and continues to shape—the cultural fabric of the university.
