Free Indigenous Peoples Day gathering on Thursday welcomes students, families and the broader Stockton community

San Joaquin Delta College is inviting the Stockton community to come together Thursday, October 8, for a free celebration honoring the cultures, histories and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

The college's Indigenous Peoples Day event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. at the President's Patio on Delta's Stockton campus, 5151 Pacific Avenue.

The gathering is free and open to the public. Delta College students and employees are invited alongside families and community members from throughout the area.

The celebration comes just days before Indigenous Peoples' Day, observed nationally on the second Monday in October, which falls on October 12 this year. The day recognizes Native American peoples and their histories and cultures.

For Stockton and San Joaquin County, that recognition also carries a distinctly local connection.

Long before Stockton became a city or San Joaquin County became one of California's original counties, Native peoples lived throughout the region. Historical accounts of the area identify Yokuts and Miwok people among the Indigenous communities who inhabited what is now San Joaquin County, with their lives closely connected to the rivers, wetlands, plants, fish and wildlife of the Central Valley.

That history makes events such as Delta's celebration an opportunity not only to recognize Indigenous cultures nationally, but also to consider the much older story of the place Stockton residents call home.

A Celebration Open to the Community

Delta College describes Thursday's gathering as an opportunity to "honor and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of indigenous peoples."

Opening the event beyond the campus community gives Stockton-area residents an opportunity to participate as well. Families and community members are specifically welcomed by the college.

The event also comes during a period of broader recognition of Native American history and culture in California. On September 25, California observed its 59th annual Native American Day, with this year's state theme focused on tribal sovereignty and the work of tribal nations to protect their people, lands and cultures.

Indigenous Peoples' Day provides another opportunity to recognize those histories while bringing attention to the living cultures, communities and contributions of Native peoples today.

For a region as culturally diverse as Stockton and San Joaquin County, gatherings like Thursday's also create space for residents to learn about experiences and histories that can sometimes receive less attention in traditional accounts of California and local history.
