San Joaquin Audubon's October 31 outing offers a relaxed introduction to identifying birds by sight and sound.

The next interesting bird you see might not require a long drive or a trip into the wilderness. It might be waiting in a tree along a familiar Stockton walkway, noticed only when someone takes a moment to stop and look.

San Joaquin Audubon Society will offer beginners that opportunity on Saturday, October 31, 2026, with a bird walk at University of the Pacific from 9 to 11 a.m.

Leader Henry Koertzen will guide a stroll around campus, helping visitors identify the birds they encounter. The gathering is designed as an introduction, with room for questions rather than an expectation of expertise.

Learning to Notice

The organizer welcomes questions about recognizing birds by sight or sound, choosing binoculars and using free phone apps. Visitors can bring their own binoculars or borrow an extra pair.

For someone curious about birdwatching, those details remove a common uncertainty: whether special knowledge or equipment is needed before joining. Here, learning the basics is the point of the outing.

Looking carefully can also change the experience of a familiar place. A bird's movement, shape or call gives an observer something to investigate. Walking with someone who can explain what to look for turns that moment of curiosity into a starting point.

A Different Saturday Morning

The campus setting makes the outing a chance to explore wildlife within the city. It offers a different way to spend part of Halloween morning, especially for residents interested in an outdoor activity before the evening's celebrations.

No particular bird sighting is guaranteed or promised in the announcement. The interest lies in discovering what is present that day and learning how to observe it.

That makes a beginner walk approachable in another way: there is no checklist to complete before the morning can feel worthwhile. Learning to recognize one new sound or use binoculars more comfortably can be a useful discovery.

Where to Meet

Date: Saturday, October 31, 2026.
Time: 9–11 a.m.
Place: University of the Pacific, 3601 Pacific Avenue, Stockton.
Meeting point: Fountain just north of the library.
Leader: Henry Koertzen, San Joaquin Audubon Society.

Bring binoculars if you have them; the organizer says extras will be available. Check the event registration listing and San Joaquin Audubon's October calendar for current attendance information and updates.

Discovering wildlife does not always mean finding somewhere new. Sometimes it begins with seeing the place you already know a little differently.
