Stockton’s cultural calendar will shine a little brighter this October as the Diwali Festival & Show 2026 brings an afternoon of celebration, cultural performances and community connection to Stagg High School.

Organized by the American Desi Society, the all-ages celebration is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Stagg High School Performing Arts Theatre, 1621 Brookside Road in Stockton. Admission is being offered free, along with free parking.

But this year’s celebration is about more than putting on a show. Organizers are also inviting cultural performers and vendors to participate, seeking community sponsors and offering four $500 scholarships for high school students, giving the festival an educational component alongside its celebration of South Asian culture.

A Celebration of Light, Culture and Community

Diwali, widely known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by millions of people around the world and carries traditions associated with light overcoming darkness, good over evil and renewal.

In Stockton, the American Desi Society has helped turn that tradition into a community celebration designed to be shared beyond any single family or cultural group.

Visit Stockton has previously described the organization's annual Diwali Festival & Show as a multicultural and inclusive event welcoming people from different backgrounds and centered on the idea of the universal light within everyone. Previous Stockton celebrations have incorporated South Asian arts and culture into the festival experience.

That openness makes the event an opportunity not only for South Asian families to celebrate their heritage, but also for Stockton residents unfamiliar with Diwali to experience another part of the city's cultural landscape.

For a community as diverse as Stockton, that may be one of the afternoon's most important features.

You don't have to grow up celebrating Diwali to be invited in.

Stockton's South Asian Community Takes the Stage

The American Desi Society is currently accepting submissions for cultural performances for the October celebration. Vendor applications and sponsorship opportunities are also open.

While organizers have not yet published a complete 2026 performance lineup, the invitation to performers suggests that the stage will again be an important part of the festival.

The American Desi Society has a track record of creating sizable cultural gatherings in Stockton. A San Joaquin Community Foundation report on an earlier American Desi Society spring festival noted attendance of more than 500 community members, including 75 children who performed. The report identified the organization as serving South Asian Indian communities as well as the broader population.

That emphasis on young performers is particularly fitting for an event taking place on a high school campus.

Instead of culture being something children simply observe, events like Diwali give younger generations an opportunity to participate in it, perform it and share it with their friends and neighbors.

Four Scholarships Add Another Reason to Celebrate

This year's announcement includes another notable component: four $500 scholarships for high school students.

Applications are now open, according to the organizer.

The scholarship program adds a practical investment in young people to an event already centered on culture and community.

For students, $500 can help with books, supplies, application expenses or some of the many other costs that accompany the transition from high school to college or career training.

For the festival itself, the scholarships also send a broader message.

Celebrating heritage isn't only about looking backward at traditions passed from one generation to another. It can also mean investing in what the next generation will do with the opportunities placed before them.

The American Desi Society has not yet published detailed scholarship eligibility requirements on the public event listing, so interested students and families should contact the organization for application information rather than assuming specific qualifications.

A Festival Open to Stockton

Hosting the celebration at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School also places the event in a familiar community setting.

The school's Performing Arts Theatre is located at 1621 Brookside Road, and the Diwali Festival & Show is being promoted as an all-ages event with free parking.

For someone who has never attended a Diwali celebration, the afternoon offers a particularly accessible introduction.

Come for a cultural performance.

Explore what participating vendors bring.

Learn something about a tradition you may not celebrate at home.

Or simply bring the family and experience an afternoon created around culture, community and joy.

That type of exchange matters in a city where many different cultures live alongside one another. Community festivals provide an opportunity to move beyond simply knowing that those cultures exist and actually experience some of the music, dance, traditions and stories neighbors bring with them.

A Stockton Tradition Continues

The Diwali Festival & Show isn't new to Stockton.

American Desi Society has organized previous Diwali celebrations in the city, including a 2025 event at Cesar Chavez High School. Visit Stockton described that celebration as an annual South Asian arts and culture event intended to bring together people from different backgrounds.

The organization itself has also received public recognition locally. In August 2024, the Stockton City Council presented a certificate of recognition to American Desi Society founders Virtu Arora, Sonia Walia, Vilas Patel, Naveen Patel and Gurinder Dhatt.

This year, the celebration moves to Stagg High School while continuing that larger mission of bringing South Asian culture into a public community setting.

And the combination of cultural performances, vendors and student scholarships gives Stockton residents several reasons to participate.

For families with South Asian roots, it is an opportunity to celebrate and share traditions.

For high school students, it could mean scholarship support.

For performers, it is a stage.

For vendors and community organizations, it is a place to connect.

And for Stockton residents who have never celebrated Diwali before, it is an invitation to experience the Festival of Lights close to home.
