Gawdin Wins WHL Championship

Calgary Flames prospect, Glenn Gawdin led to the Swift Current Broncos to their first Western Hockey League Championship in 25 years. Gawdin, the fourth year player and captain of the Broncos, recorded an assist in the 3-0 victory to win the Ed Chenoweth Cup.

Gawdin was outstanding all playoffs long, recording 14 goals and 18 assists, including five goals in the six-game Finals against the Everett Silvertips. His team-leading 32 points led his team and earned him MVP of the 2018 WHL playoffs.

Gawdin and the Broncos season will continue in the prestigious Memorial Cup, a tournament held annually to determine the winner of the Canadian Hockey League.

It is a four-team round robin tournament played between the host team and the winners of the three league members Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior League (QMJL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL).

Tyler Parsons won the Memorial Cup in 2016 with the London Knights of the OHL. The American goaltender told Heat TV earlier this season that is top hockey memory, ranking above winning the goal medal in the World Junior Tournament two years ago.

The 2018 Memorial Cup kicks off on Friday, May 18 with the Hamilton Bulldogs, this year’s OHL Champions, taking on the hosts, the Regina Pats. Gawdin and the Broncos’ first game will be on Saturday, May 19 when they battle Acadie-Bathurst, this year’s QMJHL Champions.

The Memorial Cup Final will be held on Sunday, May 27.
