Stockton theatergoers are in for a thought-provoking experience this October as Delta Drama students take the stage with Marisol, a gripping play by José Rivera that blends surreal fantasy with a darkly dystopian vision of modern life.
The production, running Oct. 10–12 and Oct. 17–19 at Delta College’s Tillie Lewis Theatre, explores questions of faith, survival, and humanity’s struggle for order in a collapsing world.
A Story of Survival in a Collapsing Universe
At the heart of the play is Marisol Perez, a young Latina copy editor from the Bronx. After narrowly escaping a brutal subway attack, Marisol is confronted by her guardian angel—who shockingly abandons her to join a heavenly revolution against a senile God.
From there, Marisol is thrust into an apocalyptic New York City, where the skies are blackened, food turns to salt, and angels wield Uzis instead of wings. Along her journey, she encounters a series of haunting characters: a homeless burn victim searching for his lost skin, a woman punished for exceeding her credit limit, and displaced masses who ultimately rise to fight alongside angels in a desperate battle to save the universe.

Directed by Karen Vance, Marisol showcases the talents of Delta Drama’s students both on stage and behind the scenes. Costumes are designed by Jonathan Singer, while Kevin Bautch doubles as set and lighting designer.
