Families from across San Joaquin County are invited to enjoy a full day of free activities when Family Day at the Park returns to downtown Stockton on Saturday, September 19.
Now celebrating its 29th year, the longtime community tradition will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Weber Point Events Center, located at Center Street and Miner Avenue. The free event brings together reading, education and entertainment while encouraging children to discover the joy of books.
Presented by the Library and Literacy Foundation of San Joaquin County and The Record, Family Day at the Park typically features approximately 80 nonprofit organizations, service groups and local businesses. Participating organizations are encouraged to offer interactive projects that give children opportunities to learn, create and explore.
“Family Day in the Park was one of the first events we put on for the community, and its longevity is testament to how much the community enjoys the one-day event,” organizer Carrie Sass said. “Since its inception, it keeps growing. The community keeps showing up to support it and to enjoy the day.”
Visitors will be welcomed by colorful balloon displays marking themed areas such as Healthy Highway, Safety City, Recreation Road, King Author’s Court and Transportation Nation.
The festivities will begin with a mascot parade through Safety City. Previous parades have featured University of the Pacific’s Power Cat, mascots from San Joaquin Delta College, the Stockton Kings and Stockton Ports, along with superheroes and other costumed characters. Families are invited to join the parade and take photos with the participants.
Throughout the day, superheroes and princesses from University of the Pacific will read stories to children, while local writers will share their books at King Author’s Court.
Organizers say the event remains especially important at a time when phones, tablets and other devices compete for children’s attention.
“We are thrilled to have this annual event that encourages reading and literacy, especially now when so many children have cell phones or tablets that might distract them from picking up a good book,” organizer Anna Sass said.
Children will also be able to participate in hands-on activities, learn about bicycle safety, explore the City of Stockton’s water hyacinth boat and take home complimentary items from participating vendors. Giveaways may include books, treats and small toys.
“Family Day at the Park is a truly unique event focused on kids,” Sass said. “The local businesses and nonprofits come up with extremely creative, interactive experiences, and the event simply wouldn’t be possible without their support.”
Live music, clowns and other performers will add to the festive atmosphere. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase.
