Halloween Comes to Downtown: Free Monster Mash Gives Stockton Families a Safe Place to Trick-or-Treat

Event date: 10/30/2026 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Export event

Downtown Stockton will trade business suits for superhero capes, princess dresses and plenty of Halloween costumes when Monster Mash 2026 takes over Courthouse Plaza on Friday, October 30.

Hosted by Main Street Youth & Family Services, the free celebration will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at Courthouse Plaza, 306 E. Main Street. Organizers are inviting children, youth and families to dress up, bring their trick-or-treat bags and spend the evening enjoying a safe, family-friendly Halloween celebration in the heart of downtown.

Halloween Fun Without the Price Tag

For families looking for an alternative to traditional neighborhood trick-or-treating, Monster Mash will offer safe trick-or-treating with candy provided by participating vendors and community partners, along with games, crafts, activities and food options. Costumes are encouraged, and admission is completely free.

The event comes just one day before Halloween, making it an easy way for children to get an early start on filling their candy buckets while parents connect with local organizations.

That community connection is an important part of Monster Mash. Main Street Youth & Family Services works with children, youth and families and describes its community events as opportunities to create welcoming spaces for connection. The organization is also recruiting volunteers to help with activities, registration, setup and cleanup at events such as Monster Mash.

A Downtown Tradition Grows

Monster Mash isn't starting from scratch. The celebration evolved from Parents by Choice's Annual Safe Trick or Treat event, carrying the concept of a safer community Halloween experience into a larger downtown gathering.

Last year's Monster Mash also demonstrated how the event can connect families with more than candy. The Downtown Stockton Alliance reported that local vendors provided information about services and resources for parents and families while children enjoyed food, candy and activities.

That combination helps distinguish Monster Mash from a typical Halloween party. Children get the fun they expect, while community organizations have an opportunity to meet families in a relaxed setting and introduce them to services that may be useful long after the costumes are put away.

A Different Kind of Friday Night Downtown

The Courthouse Plaza location also puts the celebration squarely in the center of Stockton's downtown district.

Instead of families simply moving from house to house for candy, Monster Mash creates a central gathering place where children can trick-or-treat among participating organizations while parents enjoy an event designed specifically around families.

It is also part of a broader trend of downtown organizations using Halloween to bring residents into the city center. Last year, Downtown Stockton hosted several separate Halloween activities, with Monster Mash among the events highlighted by the Downtown Stockton Alliance.

This year's celebration arrives on Friday evening, October 30, giving families an opportunity to begin Halloween weekend together before the holiday itself on Saturday.
