Patricia Barber Quartet, Reception Continue Delta Jazz Festival

San Joaquin Delta College and the Division of Arts and Communication continue the Delta Jazz Festival with a concert on Wednesday, February 20, featuring the Patricia Barber Quartet. The performance, which will be held at Tillie Lewis Theater on the Delta College campus, 5151 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $15.

Born in a west Chicago suburb to a big-band saxophonist father who played on call with Glenn Miller and a sometime blues dinger mother, Barber studied classical piano and psychology at the University of Iowa. She resisted the pull to become a jazz artist, but by the time she finished college her musical gifts won out.

Barber is a study in contradiction. She is one of the most highly sought-after concert artists in jazz, and one of the most difficult to get. Her music is uniquely hers (and her fans’) and she doesn’t explain it or herself. She is at once a big success and a well-kept secret. She is elusive but pulls out all the stops at the few venues where she chooses to perform throughout the year. She regularly sells out concerts in European capitals from Lisbon to Moscow. Paris is her musical second home.

Barber’s early days were spent playing at Chicago’s legendary Gold Star Sardine Bar. As early as 1994, Bill Zehme of Esquire Magazine wrote, “Patricia Barber makes jazz the Tiffany makes crystal—sleek and smart and dazzling…She is, for my money, the best jazz performer currently working the planet.”

Delta Jazz Series Special Event
Prior to concert, the Quartet will perform at an Exhibition Preview gala reception at the Delta Center for the Arts Horton Art Gallery from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $75. The Gallery will present a concurrent exhibition, The Art of Jazz, February 21 through March 21, of works inspired by the improvisational characteristics of Jazz – its distinct sound, history and culture.

SJDC Culinary Arts Program (under Chef Mark Berkner) will cater the reception, and LoCA Wines will be served. Funding supports Concerts for Kids, the Horton Art Gallery, and the SJDC Culinary Arts Program

The Art of Jazz Exhibition is a visual musical experience, featuring works by ten national artists, including SJDC Ceramics Professor Joe Mariscal, and Lodi artist Jim Coston. A variety of works will be displayed: paintings, bronze and ceramic sculpture, intaglio prints, and several sculptural musical instruments, each representing the sounds of Jazz through visual art. February 21st, which is opening night, will present Jazz poet Charles Blackwell accompanied by Brian Kendrick on drums.
A grant from the Stockton Arts Commission was awarded to Delta Center for the Arts, coordinated by Gallery Director Jan Marlese, to fund the exhibition, including the commission of a new work of art and a new Jazz composition. The commissioned visual artist and composer collaborated on their production – with each other’s art form and style informing and inspiring their new creations.

With Delta Center for the Arts Delta Jazz Series presenting an annual Jazz Festival and several Jazz concerts each year, it was decided that the commissioned artwork would be in the form of three 11’ x 7’ panels to be displayed on stage during Jazz concerts. SJDC Art Professor Mario Moreno was commissioned to create the concert stage panels, along with three SJDC art students (Vicente Tomas, Marco Junez and Lily Dircksen) as apprentices. James Miley, Jazz musician, composer and Professor of Music and Jazz Studies at Willamette University in Portland, Oregon, was commissioned to compose an original Jazz score.

The stage panels will premiere at the Patricia Barber Quartet concert.
