Stockton's tree canopy is about to get a lot bigger, and county parks officials want residents to help plant it. San Joaquin County Parks & Recreation and Little Manila Rising are inviting volunteers to two free tree-planting days this month, the opening events in a four-year effort to add more than 1,000 trees to the city's community parks.
The partnership aims to expand the tree canopy, reduce the urban heat index, and create greener, cooler community spaces across Stockton neighborhoods.
The first planting day is Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gianone Park, 2885 E. Harding Way. Little Manila Rising's Urban Forestry program will join County Parks staff, the Stockton Service Corps, and students from Franklin High School's AVID and PLUS programs, along with District 1 Board Supervisor Mario Gardea, to plant trees and clean up and beautify the park. A free lunch is provided for every volunteer.
A second planting day follows Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at Taft Community Park, 389 Downing Avenue, where County Parks and Little Manila Rising's Urban Forestry Division will lead volunteers in planting trees and expanding the park's canopy in South Stockton.
Both events are free and open to the public. No experience is required, just a willingness to dig in and wear clothes ready for outdoor work.
