Stockton’s Own David Doyle Scores Big with Bestselling Novel “Parker”

How a Local Educator-Turned-Author is Inspiring the Next Generation Through Representation, Resilience, and Reading

Every once in a while, a story comes along that mirrors the heartbeat of a community. For Stockton native David Doyle, that story is Parker—a young adult novel that’s not only climbing the Amazon bestseller charts but also igniting a movement in classrooms across California.

Doyle, a longtime educator and current high school Vice Principal, has worn many hats: guidance counselor, Division I football player, coach, athletic trainer, and now, author. With Parker, he blends his passion for mentorship and athletics into a coming-of-age tale that hits hard and heals hearts.

Set in the life of 12-year-old Parker Hayes, the novel captures a young boy’s dream to make it big in football—but it’s far from just a sports story. When Parker is thrust into the role of “man of the house” following a life-altering family revelation, he embarks on a journey of resilience, self-discovery, and ambition. Through moments of heartache and triumph, Parker learns what it truly means to chase a dream—and what it costs to make that dream a reality.

“You don’t have to be a football fan to love this book,” says Robert Pecot, Ed.D., Superintendent of Tracy Unified School District. “While the football scenes are exciting and well-written, the story is about so much more—family, perseverance, and finding your place in the world.”

Doyle’s work has been praised for filling a critical gap in young adult literature: culturally responsive storytelling that speaks directly to students who often feel unseen in traditional curriculum. Several school districts, including those in San Joaquin County, have already adopted Parker into their classrooms as part of equity-driven reading initiatives.

“Parker is more than just a story of a young man’s dream,” says San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools Troy A. Brown. “It’s a story about family, resilience, and the journey we are all on.”

Former NFL player Lavelle Hawkins called Parker “a must-read for any young athlete chasing a dream.”

Doyle’s connection to the story runs deep. Raised in the San Fernando Valley and now proudly calling Stockton home, he brings a wealth of personal experience to the page. He earned his Master’s in Educational Counseling from San Jose State University, and his life in education and athletics has uniquely positioned him to write characters that are as authentic as they are inspiring.

“I wrote Parker for every student who’s ever felt like their story wasn’t being told,” Doyle says. “Representation matters—and when students see themselves in the pages, everything changes.”

The impact of Parker extends beyond bookshelves. Doyle is on a mission to use his platform to promote youth literacy, elevate local voices, and ensure that every student—no matter their background—knows their story is worth telling.
