In the heart of Downtown Stockton, The Golden Rose Barbershop is doing more than cutting hair. It is preserving a piece of local history while helping shape the personality and pride of downtown today.
Located at 15 S. San Joaquin Street, The Golden Rose Barbershop Co. is featured in the Downtown Stockton Alliance’s Doorways to Downtown video series, which highlights the people, stories, and small businesses that make downtown Stockton unique. The series invites viewers to “open the doors” to local businesses and learn more about the owners and operators behind them.
The Golden Rose has deep roots. According to the Downtown Stockton Alliance, the location began as the Syndicate Barbershop before Frank Rose took over in 1910 and later transformed it into The Golden Rose Barbershop in 1917. Current owner Steven Herder took over in 2018 and has continued the shop’s long-running legacy as a classic downtown barbershop with a refined, welcoming feel.
Inside, the shop blends old-school barber tradition with a polished modern experience. The Golden Rose offers luxury grooming services including haircuts, beard trims, straight razor shaves, and combination services. The business is known for its vintage atmosphere, warm conversation, and the kind of personal attention that makes a barbershop feel like a neighborhood gathering place rather than just another appointment.
Herder has described his vision as creating a shop that feels elegant, natural, comfortable, and welcoming. That spirit comes through in the shop’s atmosphere, from the music and décor to the way barbers connect with clients. The goal is not just to send people out with a clean cut, but to make them feel like family while they are there.
The shop’s story also reflects the larger story of Downtown Stockton’s small business community. In a district filled with historic buildings, creative entrepreneurs, local restaurants, shops, and gathering spaces, The Golden Rose stands as a reminder that downtown’s future is being built one storefront at a time. Businesses like this bring life to the sidewalks, preserve local character, and give residents another reason to explore the city center.
The Golden Rose Barbershop is open Monday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 15 S. San Joaquin Street in Stockton. More information and booking details are available through the Downtown Stockton Alliance business spotlight.
