The Rhythm of Tradition: Polynesian Dancers Gather in Stockton for Tamure Celebration

Mata’irea’s Nov. 14 gathering brings Tahitian dance to the downtown waterfront for a noncompetitive end-of-season celebration.

Event date: 11/14/2026 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM Export event

Mata’irea Polynesian Culture Preservation will close its dance season with the Tamure Marathon on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel in downtown Stockton. The Downtown Stockton Alliance describes the gathering as a chance for dancers to share their love of Tahitian dance in a noncompetitive setting.

A season finale centered on dancing together

The Stockton nonprofit says its work includes building relationships with Polynesian communities and fostering awareness of their dance, music, customs and beliefs. Tahitian dance, or ’Ori Tahiti, is the focus of this gathering. The end-of-season format gives dancers time to share the floor and close the season together.

How a dance tradition passes between generations

Cultural preservation happens in the time dancers spend together. A teacher can demonstrate where a movement lands in the rhythm, and a younger dancer can watch, try it and repeat it alongside someone with more experience. Those exchanges pass on the details of the dance and give younger dancers a chance to build relationships with the people who carry it forward.
