A crew that helped put Stockton and the Central Valley on the international breaking map is coming home for a major celebration of hip-hop culture.

Style Elements Crew will celebrate its 32nd anniversary with “Origins: Back to the Roots” on Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12, 2026, bringing elite breakers, dancers, DJs, artists and hip-hop fans from California, across the country and around the world to Stockton.

For Style Elements Crew, the location is significant.

The influential breaking crew was established in the Stockton and Modesto area in the 1990s and went on to build an international reputation for creativity, originality and a distinctive approach to breaking. Its influence eventually extended far beyond the Central Valley, with members competing, teaching and helping shape breaking culture around the world.

Now, more than three decades later, the celebration is returning to where much of that story began.

Two Days of Breaking, Music and Hip-Hop Culture

“Origins: Back to the Roots” is designed as more than a dance competition.

The two-day gathering will feature a packed lineup of battles, including the Top 16 True Crew Battle, 2-on-2 Popping Battle, All Styles Battle, Super Dave Power Move Competition, Crumbs Stacking Battle, Next Generation Youth Battle and a 1-on-1 B-Girl Battle. Live DJs, special performances, workshops, masterclasses and panel discussions will add to the weekend.

The official event describes Origins as a cultural platform centered on community, creativity and the legacy of hip-hop, bringing together generations of artists while giving audiences an opportunity to experience breaking at an elite level.

Friday's activities will take place at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds, Buildings 3, 4 and 5, at 1658 S. Airport Way. On Saturday, the celebration moves downtown to the Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium, 525 N. Center Street.

From Stockton Roots to Global Influence

For local residents, the anniversary offers an opportunity to celebrate a piece of Stockton's cultural history that may not always receive the recognition it deserves.

Breaking grew from neighborhood gatherings, music, creativity and competition into a worldwide art form. Style Elements emerged from that culture in Stockton and Modesto and became recognized for pushing the dance forward with innovative movement, intricate routines and an emphasis on individual style.

That makes the title “Back to the Roots” particularly fitting.

The weekend is not simply about looking back at what Style Elements accomplished. It also brings younger dancers into the same space as veterans of the culture, providing opportunities for mentorship, competition and the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next.

For Stockton, it is also a chance to welcome dancers and hip-hop enthusiasts from outside the region to the city where an internationally influential crew helped get its start.

This September, dancers from around the world will come to Stockton not simply for another competition, but to celebrate a crew, a culture and more than three decades of history.

Style Elements is going back to its roots, and those roots lead directly to the Central Valley.
