University of the Pacific students will soon be returning to Stockton for a new academic year, and the Miracle Mile is preparing to welcome them back with a community-wide celebration.

Tigers Prowlin' The Mile will take place Friday, August 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. along Stockton's Miracle Mile, bringing together Pacific students, faculty, staff, local businesses and residents for an evening designed to strengthen the connection between the university and the surrounding community.

The event is free and open to all ages.

Instead of introducing students to Stockton through a classroom or orientation presentation, Tigers Prowlin' The Mile gives them an opportunity to experience one of the city's best-known business districts firsthand.

Restaurants, shops and businesses throughout the Miracle Mile will help welcome the Pacific community while residents are encouraged to come out and join the celebration.

The event also arrives at an important time for neighborhood businesses.

Thousands of students returning to Pacific represent potential new customers for restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and service businesses throughout central Stockton. Introducing students to the Miracle Mile early in the academic year may encourage them to continue exploring and supporting local businesses throughout their time at Pacific.

The evening is also an opportunity for longtime Stockton residents to welcome a new generation of students to the city.

Pacific's relationship with Stockton dates back more than a century, and generations of students have become part of the community while attending the university.

Events such as Tigers Prowlin' The Mile help reinforce that connection by bringing the campus and community together in the same space.

The celebration follows another Pacific community tradition, the Pacific Day of Service, during which students volunteer with organizations and projects throughout Stockton.

Together, the two events provide incoming students with two very different introductions to the city — one centered on service and another on experiencing the businesses, neighborhoods and people that make Stockton home.

For Miracle Mile merchants, Pacific students and local families alike, Tigers Prowlin' The Mile offers a festive way to begin a new school year while celebrating the connection between one of Stockton's oldest institutions and the community around it.
