When University of the Pacific welcomes alumni, families and visitors back to its Stockton campus for Homecoming and Family Weekend, one of Friday's celebrations will extend an invitation well beyond the university community.

Queer Cheer 2026 returns Friday, October 9, bringing music, performances, student organizations and local LGBTQ+-friendly vendors to Pacific's McCaffrey Center. The annual celebration is organized by Pacific's Center for Identity and Inclusion and Pride Resource Center and is open to the general public.

Pacific describes the event simply: “Everyone is invited” to an afternoon centered on music, performance and community celebration.

That makes Queer Cheer more than another activity on a busy Homecoming schedule. It creates a place where students, alumni, families and Stockton residents can gather around something fundamental to any community: belonging.

Pride Meets Homecoming

Queer Cheer takes place during Pacific's Homecoming and Family Weekend, October 9–11, when alumni return to campus and current students, families and prospective students take part in a packed weekend of university traditions and activities.

The timing gives Queer Cheer a particularly visible place on the calendar.

Rather than existing separately from Homecoming, the celebration becomes part of it.

Pacific's official event listing identifies Queer Cheer as an annual celebration and says it will feature university organizations, local LGBTQ+-friendly vendors, music and more. Its intended audiences include students and employees as well as alumni, parents, prospective students and the general public.

That broad invitation is important.

For current students, Queer Cheer offers an opportunity to celebrate identity and find community. For alumni returning to Stockton, it can provide a window into today's campus culture. For families and prospective students, it offers another glimpse of university life.

And for Stockton residents who have no formal connection to Pacific, it is an invitation onto campus to participate.

Music, Performances and Community

Pacific's Homecoming schedule describes Queer Cheer as an afternoon featuring music, performance, student organizations and vendors at the McCaffrey Center.

The university has not published a detailed public lineup identifying individual performers or vendors, so visitors should expect the broader festival format rather than a specific advertised headliner.

That may actually fit the purpose of the event.

Queer Cheer isn't being promoted around one performer. The focus is the gathering itself.

Student organizations can introduce visitors to the communities and activities they represent. Local vendors bring a connection to life beyond campus. Music and performances turn the gathering into a celebration rather than simply an informational event.

Together, those elements create a setting where someone can stop by for the entertainment and leave having met people or discovered organizations they didn't previously know.

An Invitation Beyond Pacific

One of the more notable details in Pacific's listing is the audience.

The university explicitly includes the general public alongside alumni, faculty, students, staff, parents and prospective students.

That makes Queer Cheer relevant beyond the campus.

Universities can sometimes feel like communities within communities, particularly to people who don't attend or work there. Public events can help break down that divide.

A Stockton resident doesn't need to be a Pacific graduate to attend.

A family considering the university doesn't have to wait for a formal admissions tour to experience the campus.

An alumnus who hasn't visited in years can see how student life has evolved.

And a young person looking for community can encounter organizations and people in an environment specifically created around connection and celebration.

A Bigger Weekend at Pacific

Queer Cheer also arrives during an unusually significant Homecoming year.

Pacific is celebrating its 175th anniversary in 2026, making this year's Homecoming and Family Weekend part of a milestone year for the university. The weekend runs October 9 through October 11 and includes campus tours, university programs, alumni gatherings, concerts and other celebrations.

On Friday alone, visitors can move from Queer Cheer into other Homecoming activities taking place across campus.

That overlap is part of what makes the event notable.

Homecoming traditionally asks alumni to return and remember what a university was.

Events like Queer Cheer also show them what it has become.

Creating Space to Belong

There is an easy temptation to describe Pride-related events primarily through flags, music and celebration.

Those things matter. They're also only part of the story.

At its core, Queer Cheer is about creating a visible place for people to gather and feel included in campus life.

Pacific places the event within its Center for Identity and Inclusion, with the Pride Resource Center listed as an organizer. The university calendar also connects the event with Pacific's broader identity-focused programs, including Black Student Services, El Centro, Native American Student Services and Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi Student Services.

That context gives the celebration a larger purpose.

A university community is made up of people arriving from different cities, cultures, families and experiences. Creating opportunities for those students to find one another can be an important part of making a campus feel like home.

Queer Cheer makes that effort visible.

And during Homecoming, it does so at a moment when generations of the Pacific community are coming together in the same place.

Everyone Is Invited

For Stockton residents curious about the event, Pacific's message is straightforward.

Come to campus.

Listen to the music.

Watch the performances.

Meet student organizations and local vendors.

And spend part of Friday celebrating alongside the Pacific community.

You don't have to be a student. You don't have to be an alumnus. You don't have to have another reason to be on campus that afternoon.

Everyone is invited.

In a Homecoming weekend built around returning to a place where people once found community, Queer Cheer offers something equally important:

A chance for someone new to find it.
