The Superior Court of California, County of San Joaquin, announced it has completed an extensive investigation into unauthorized activity discovered on its computer network, confirming that an outside individual accessed certain court systems late last year.
According to the Court, the intrusion occurred between October 25 and October 30, 2024, during which the unauthorized party acquired copies of specific files stored on its network. Once the activity was detected, the Court immediately contained the incident, launched an internal review, and brought in a specialized cybersecurity firm with experience handling similar attacks. The matter was also reported to law enforcement.
What Information Was Involved
Following a lengthy and detailed examination of the affected files, the Court determined that the compromised data included individuals’ names in combination with one or more forms of sensitive personal information. This may include:
-
Social Security numbers
-
Driver’s license or California ID numbers
-
Tax identification numbers
-
Passport or military ID numbers
-
Financial account or credit/debit card numbers
-
Medical or health insurance information
The Court emphasized that not every individual had all these data types exposed; the contents varied by file.
Free Identity Protection Offered
As a precaution, the Court is offering one year of complimentary identity protection and credit-monitoring services to anyone whose personal information may have been involved in the incident.
