Music, poetry and personal expression will take center stage in Downtown Stockton on Saturday, October 10, as Little Manila Rising hosts Open Mind & Open Mic, a community event recognizing World Mental Health Day.
The evening will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Little Manila Rising Workforce Hub, 27 S. Grant Street, and is open to singers, poets, rappers, musicians and other artists who want to share their creativity with the community. The event begins with a DJ session featuring DJ Nasu from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by an open mic from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The event's connection to World Mental Health Day gives the open mic a purpose beyond entertainment. Organizers are encouraging participants to use music, poetry and storytelling as ways to express themselves, share experiences and connect with others. Little Manila Rising's Healing PUSO program focuses specifically on reducing barriers surrounding mental health and helping community members normalize and prioritize their mental well-being.
Artists who would like to perform can submit their information ahead of time so organizers can prepare music or other accompaniment. In-person performer sign-ups will also be available from 6 to 6:30 p.m. before the open mic begins. Performers are welcome to present original work or other selections, including singing, poetry, rap and instrumental performances.
Admission is based on a suggested $10 donation, but organizers emphasize that no one will be turned away because they cannot pay. Proceeds will support Healing PUSO and ECHO, two Little Manila Rising programs focused on health, wellness and community support.
For Stockton, Open Mind & Open Mic offers a creative approach to an issue that affects families throughout the community. By giving local voices a welcoming stage, the event brings together art, culture and mental-health awareness while creating a space where people can listen, perform and connect.
