Chella - Demonstration Artist – March 2013

“Using Notan in Painting”

Using as a guide the principle of Eastern art and design, Notan, I will create an oil landscape, successfully showing how it works into the composition. In the beginning of a plein air piece, Notan is the practice of balancing negative-position spaces, leading the eye into the space. First, a sketch/preliminary black and white quick layout is done. Sometimes on a small sketch pad, but generally done on the painting ground. The balance of shapes first is determined, then the dark and light areas are determined. A good solid composition is achieved. Then, I will attempt to follow through to completion a small ‘plein air’ piece.

Born in Indiana and a graduate of Ball State University with a BS in Art Education, Chella come to Modesto in September 1956 and over the past 40 years show she has taught art in Modesto’s then five high schools gained advancement each time, adult education programs and privately. Several honors gave to her through California Art Educators Association over the years. At the present time she is retired and pursuing a career in the visual arts.

During the past seventeen years Chella has had work exhibited exclusively in more than a dozen solo shows, in seven or more in national competitions and several regional and local exhibitions. In 2001 and 2008 two of her small 8” x 10’” ‘en plein air’ works and one of her large non-objective pieces was awarded third place in an annual Yosemite Renaissance Exhibitions. Corporations, such as Fireman’s Fund, Kaiser Permanente, Lodi Memorial Hospital and private investors have acquired her works. She was honored to be the Artist-in-Residence, Yosemite National Park in 2002.

Her serious consideration in oil painting is recording the Central Valley landscapes and vanishing farmland and crops, done ‘en plein aire’.

She has studied with national known artists, I Rice Pereira, Margo Hoff, Wm Scott Jennings, Gerald Brommer, E. John Robinson, Dan Petersen, Brian Blood, Richard Smith, Alexander Nepote, George Post, Richard Yip, Bob Gerbracht, Stan Goldstein, Lida Giambastini, Charles Waldman, Gil Dellinger, Randy Sexton, and Peggy Knoll-Roberts.
