Professional hockey is coming back to Stockton, and this time it is bringing back a familiar name.
The Stockton Thunder will make their home debut on Saturday, October 17, 2026, against Oceanside HC at Adventist Health Arena, marking the return of professional hockey to the city after a four-year absence. Opening night is scheduled for 6:11 p.m.
For longtime fans, the return of the Thunder name carries plenty of nostalgia. Stockton’s original Thunder franchise played in the city from 2005 to 2015 and became closely tied to the downtown arena and local hockey culture. The new Thunder are a different organization, competing in the Federal Prospects Hockey League, but the revived name was chosen after a fan-driven naming process that drew more than 20,000 votes in the final round.
The team will play a 56-game regular season, including 28 home games at Adventist Health Arena, as part of the FPHL’s expanding western footprint. Stockton joins other California teams in Fresno and Oceanside as the league pushes farther west. Before the home opener, the Thunder will begin their season on the road against Oceanside on October 11.
The organization is also building a new hockey identity around head coach Zach Pochiro, a former professional player and NHL draft selection. Team officials say the goal is to create a fast, physical and competitive style while building strong relationships with fans, youth athletes, businesses and community organizations throughout Stockton and San Joaquin County.
For Stockton, opening night represents more than another sporting event on the downtown calendar. Professional hockey has been part of the city’s entertainment landscape for much of the past two decades, first with the Thunder and later with the Stockton Heat. The Heat departed after the 2021-22 season, leaving the arena without a professional hockey tenant until now.
On October 17, fans will once again be able to gather inside the arena for the sights and sounds that made hockey nights a familiar Stockton tradition: skates cutting across the ice, checks along the boards, goal horns and a crowd ready to bring the noise.
The name may be familiar, but this is the beginning of an entirely new chapter.
