There’s a new reason to visit Micke Grove Zoo this fall—and it comes with a tortoise-sized heart! Sherman, the Zoo’s beloved Radiated Tortoise, has launched his very own Shoe Drive, inviting the community to donate new and gently used shoes (kids sizes through men’s size 13) along with much-needed hygiene items.
What Sherman Needs:
-
Shoes (all sizes up to men’s 13)
-
New, unopened socks
-
Deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss
-
Feminine hygiene products, soap, shampoo, and conditioner
Drive Dates: September 5 (International Day of Charity) – October 31
Drop-off Location: Micke Grove Zoo ticket booth
Hours: Wednesday–Sunday, 10 AM – 5 PM
When the drive ends, Sherman and his tortoise friends—Bertha, Quasi, and Cleo—will give the donations their official tortoise seal of approval! Everything collected will be donated to the American Indian Child Resource Center in Oakland on November 15, in honor of World Kindness Day.
Why It Matters
The American Indian Child Resource Center was chosen for its commitment to cultural preservation, education, and community support. The partnership reflects Micke Grove Zoo’s mission to care for both people and the environment while shining a spotlight on the critically endangered Radiated Tortoise.
Join the Movement
Sherman may move slowly, but his mission is racing ahead—bringing people together for a cause that blends compassion, conservation, and community. Be part of this unique effort, and let your donation make a difference.
